Inside the Sanctuary of Truth, Pattaya

Meaning and Historical Significance

The vibrant coastal city has a lot of history behind its name. The army leader Phraya Tak (later known as King Taksin) was marching with his army and arrived in the city now known as Pattaya. He encountered the troops of Nai Klom, who, when met him submitted to him without a fight as he was impressed with the discipline of Phraya’s army.

The place the armies approached each other came to be called ‘Thap Phraya’, meaning the army of the Phraya. It was later renamed ‘Pattaya’, which is the name of the wind blowing from southwest to northeast at the beginning of the rainy season.

Pattaya – A few years back

It started as a simple fishing village due to its prudent location along the gulf. It started to earn an identity only after the Vietnam War. History says, initially, it offered small private bungalows to American officers on leave where they took turns for rest and recreational purposes.

The vacationist soldiers were left in awe of the serenity and tranquillity the city provided. Soon, word got out of the natural and scenic wonders it had to offer and attracted major investments.
